Your pool pump is the heart of your swimming pool system. It circulates water, ensuring chemicals are mixed and debris is filtered out. Like any mechanical device, it wears down over time. Catching issues early can save you from a complete and expensive replacement.

1. Screeching or Grinding Noises

If your pump sounds like it has rocks inside or is screeching, the bearings are likely shot. This is often caused by age or a seal leak that let water into the motor. It needs immediate attention.

2. Hummming But Not Starting

If the motor hums but doesn't turn over, it could be a bad capacitor (a relatively cheap fix) or the motor itself could be seized. Don't leave it humming; it can overheat and burn out completely.

3. Leaking Water

Water pooling under the pump usually indicates a failed shaft seal. This is a common maintenance item that should be addressed to prevent water damage to the motor.

4. Sucking Air

If you see bubbles in the pump basket or return jets, there's a suction side air leak. This makes the pump work harder and reduces filtration efficiency. Check your pump lid o-ring first—it's the most common culprit.

Summary

Listen to your equipment. If it sounds different, it probably needs help. Prompt repairs extend the life of your pool pump significantly.
